With the help of digital technologies physical objects can become transform themselves into different objects for different purposes. When the context changes, the object adapts to support the new context in am more fitting way.
The single purpose technological object that has one unique defined purpose is long gone. Liquid objects have the ability to flow from context to context, showing and hiding information and capabilities, and becoming on demand the hyper niche tool that is required for the moment.
As an example take the new dashboard of a Bentley car. The mechanics of the object do not change but the interactivity and information displayed do. City driving focuses on proximity sensors and speed. Country driving focuses on RPMs and compass. And long distance driving focuses on RPMs, GPS, and speed.
These evolving interfaces for the liquid modernity are just the starting point. As physical objects also become more digital thanks to nanotechnology, advanced manufacturing, and 3D printing, most likely we will see this liquidity spreading to all aspects of objects and not just surfaces/screens.
